The White Belt Method: Simplifying Your Business Strategy

Overcomplicating things will kill your business before it ever starts.

When most people start their brand, they tend to think they have to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on logos, websites, landing pages, and ads.

The truth of the matter is most people starting their brand don't have the capital needed to make such large investments.

It's like the new guy who just joined his first BJJ class.

He sees the black belts & purple belts do all these cool moves, guard passes, and submissions. Now they find themselves trying to copy them because that's where they want to be.

As a white belt, your first lesson is to learn how to fall otherwise seen as learning the basics.

If you can't learn the most basic simplest techniques first, how can you expect to advance to higher levels?

This is the same with business.

Stop overcomplicating the process and take the white belt approach.

Here's how.

Solve A Problem. Deliver a Solution.

The first thing you need before getting an LLC, EIN, Logo, or anything you think you need for your business is a problem to solve and a solution to that problem.

When a person has a problem with their finances, they hire an accountant.

When someone has issues with managing their weight, they hire a personal trainer.

If you have a problem with building a brand, you hire a personal brand consultant.

The problem is how entrepreneurs stay in business. Without problems to solve you can't make money.

The best part is you already have countless problems you have already solved in your life. And chances are there is someone else out there suffering from that exact same problem you have faced.

Here are ways you can package and deliver your solution:

  • eBooks: The easiest way to deliver a solution to someone; typical no more than 30 pages and can be priced from $15 - $30.

  • Webinars: Maybe you're not a writer, speaking may be your thing. Record a video of yourself teaching the solution to a problem and sell the recording as a course. You can price this from $50 - $75+ depending on the value you give.

  • Offer a Service: You can always offer your solution on a personal level, that’s where coaching or consulting comes into play. Most coaches & consulting start at $500 at a beginner level and you scale up as you get results. (You also have product services like copywriting and ghostwriting.)

How you choose to deliver your solution is up to you, just make sure whatever solution you provide delivers on the value.

Finding Your Target Audience

The second thing you need is a target audience.

Your solution to a burning problem may be great, but you might as well be selling rocks without a target audience to sell it to.

You will never sell anything without a target audience that has a demand for the solution you are selling.

This is why getting to know the mindset of your target consumer is important.

Know their hobbies. Know who they follow online. Understand their burning desires. Understand what motivates them. Understand their fears as well.

The better you can get to know your audience, the easier it will be to zero in on them.

An easy way to figure out who your target audience is is to create your "customer avatar".

Your avatar is the person that comes to mind whenever you're writing or looking for new customers.

Even a past version of yourself can be your customer avatar.

It's easier to sell to yourself or a person you already understand than it is to sell to a person you have no idea of.

(Sidenote: A smart move to make is to capture the email of every person you sell to. This way you can have a bank of leads that you can always sell to again in the future.)

Collect Payment

You have a solution.

You know your target audience.

Now all you have to do is set up some form of collecting payment.

A simple Stripe account or even a PayPal is more than enough.(This is why I said you can wait for an EIN.)

Later down the road as your business grows you will want to get your tax and legal side together. But when you're first starting and looking to make money online in the next 30 days all you need is the basics.

Many people get caught in the trap of thinking they must innovate fast or have the most advanced systems. Even I fell victim to the same exact thing when I first started.

This is why the white belt method is the best approach to starting your brand for the first time. It forces you to only focus on the things you absolutely need for your business.

Build your foundation with the basics and then scale up from there. Just keep it simple.
